The M.S. program is designed to be
accomplished in two years.

However, all degree requirements,
including remedial work, must be
completed within seven years of
entering the program.

Credit for Course Work

Thesis: The M.S. student must successfully complete at least 32 semester credit hours (24 coursework and 8 hours research) coursework. Students are required to take at least two biomedical courses within the
interdisciplinary medical program, one of
which must be outside the student’s major
discipline.

Non-Thesis: Requres successful completion of a minimum of 32 semester credit hours. At least 2 courses within the interdisciplinry biomedical program are required, as well as 30 hours of course work and 2 hours of research. A research project must be completed and presented to the advisory committee (does not require public defense of project).

Students also are required to take a minimum of three credit hours of graduate-level statistics and one hour of Biomedical Sciences Seminar prior to the semester of the thesis defense.

The student can include no more than three hours of special topics and two hours of seminar credit in their program.

Credit for Course Work:  The M.S. student must successfully complete at least 24 (thesis) or 30 (non-thesis) semester hours of course work.  Students are required to take at least 2 interdisciplinary medical courses. The student can include no more than 3 hours of special topics and 2 hours of seminar credit in their program. An academic review will occur in May at the end of each year of coursework  to evaluate the progress of the student in the program.

Credit for Research and Thesis:  For M.S. thesis students, a minimum of 8 hours of research and thesis are required. For M.S. non-thesis students, a minimum of 2 hours of research are necessary, representing the student’s research project.

Minimum Number of Hours:  The total graduate hours shall not be less than 32 for either the M.S. thesis student or the M.S. non-thesis student.

Transfer Hours:  Upon approval by the student’s advisory committee (see p. 15), the student may transfer a maximum of 9 hours of graduate credit toward the M.S. degree.  Required biomedical courses must be taken at OSU-CHS.

Time of Study and Residence Requirements:  The minimum time for a student to complete the M.S. program (recognizing the sequence of required courses) is one and a half years.  However, 2 years is the usual time required by a full-time student.  The M.S. student must spend at least one semester in full-time residence at the Center for Health Sciences.  A student must complete the program within 7 years.
