 Specialty Exploration

Early clinical experiences and/or shadowing physicians can be extremely important to the specialty selection/career planning process. We have developed a number of opportunities for students who are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. Please remember to complete an extracurricular rotation application before you go!

Shadow an OSU College of Medicine alum! This is a list of physicians who have indicated interest in having a student shadow them for a period of time. Early Clinical Experience in pain management: Dr. Amayem is interested in having first and/or second year medical students for clinical rotations here.  He does some surgeries at Southwest Medical Center, Baptist Hospital and Surgical Hospital of Oklahoma City as well as procedures here in our office along with a very busy clinical practice.  His specialty is pain management-we also do spinal cord stimulator placement training twice each month on Friday with a cadaver lab here on Saturday.  You can call me at (405) 632-1783 ext. 4 or email me at bgrossarthaaspine@yahoo.com if you have any questions or need more information.  Dr. Amayem loves teaching and is really hoping we can get this program in place.

Electives at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Elective opportunities in OB-GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Orthopedic Surgery at rural acute care hospital. Hospital provides meals while working, they have a limited number of sleep rooms, and will help arrange other housing, if needed. Dermatology Elective Dermatology and Laser Institute of Colorado, P.C. They do aesthetics, skin cancer, acne, cyst removal, and laser treatments. For 1st year students there are many opportunities after the school year to explore and expand your awareness of different specialties by participating in a short term summer training/intern position.

Any extracurricular clinical activity requires the Extracurricular Rotation application.

Summer Rural Externship - Paid four-week early clinical experience funded by the Oklahoma Area Health Education Center - Application Form SRE Expectations

NEW! Internships in global health and health policy. Internships March 1 through early June, four to twelve weeks in length, flexible dates.

Unite For Sight Volunteer Abroad Opportunities. Volunteers receive hands-on clinical experience while assisting doctors in remote, rural villages.  Volunteers learn about international health and eye care, learn clinical skills while working with patients and doctors, and, in one program location, have an opportunity to practice cataract surgery on a goat's eye. Currently accepting applications for February 2008 through April 2009.  Rolling application deadline - the first qualified applicants are accepted.  Apply today!

Partners in Health Internship opportunities for students and professionals interested in learning about current issues in health and social justice. In addition to working on individual projects, summer interns have a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about PIH and gain practical exposure to the administration of a non-governmental organization through interactions with staff members, movie and book discussions, and social activities.

Annenberg Physician Training Program. Applications are now being accepted for 2008, stipend of $1000 for four weeks of participation.

American Pediatric Society/Society for Pediatric Research Deadline passed. Medical student research training program to encourage gifted medical students to consider careers in research related to pediatrics. This program is specifically designed for students seeking a research opportunity at an institution OTHER THAN THEIR OWN MEDICAL SCHOOL. Daily Stipend for participation.

The Paulette and Denzel Washington Family Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award Deadline passed. Research in the field of neuroscience. Awardees will be matched with a principal investigator to work on a research project in a laboratory under the direction of Dr. Keith L. Black in one of the following areas: Blood-brain barrier and drug delivery into the CNS, immunology and cancer vaccine, gene therapy, gene discovery or advanced surgical technology. $2500 for medical students.

Interhealth South America. The principal format of the program provides structured group and individual field experiences in international health, coordinated with medical language immersion study.

Himalayan Health Exchange Short-term health care expeditions. The focus is preventive medicine and public health education. Specialties may be utilized depending on student interests and areas of study. We always maintain a professional respect for the local health care delivery system as well as any religious or cultural customs associated with illness and health.

Betty Ford Summer Institute for Medical Students The Summer Institute for Medical Students is a unique learning experience for medical students to gain understanding and insight into addictive disease and the recovery process. student spends 5 days in 1 of 3 programs. Several sessions offered during the summer.

Center for Talented Youth at John Hopkins. Summer employment opportunities.

Kettering Center Medical Education - Medical Student Summer Student Fellowship Program aims to introduce medical students to the field of oncology and biomedical research. The objective of this 8-week program is the educational enrichment of medical students by offering the opportunity to conduct basic laboratory and clinical research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

The Rogers Fellowship (Deadline, March 21, 2008) is meant to enrich the educational experiences of medical and dental students through projects that bear on medicine and dentistry as social enterprises that is, as enterprises devoted to the capacity of these professions in any and all of their expressions to serve human needs particularly the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations. The content of the Fellowship might include clinical investigation, health policy analysis, activities linking biomedicine, the social infrastructure and human need, or community activities.

American College of Rheumatology research award. The Research and Education Foundation the 501 (c)(3) charitable affiliate of the American College of Rheumatology. The REF is committed to funding rheumatology training and research programs that are vital to the care of patients suffering from these diseases. Recieve $1500 for four-week session or $3000 for 8-week session, plus travel money to attend Annual Scientific Meeting. Must have a preceptor, preceptors receive money as well.
