Wards and Service Lines

The core IM teaching services are centered at OSUMC, with an additional service line at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center.  Residents split time between 2 inpatient general medicine teams at OSUMC, in addition to a 32 bed ICU service.  Medicine teams typically include 2 upper level residents, 1-2 interns and 3-4 medical students.  We also have a tremendous clinical pharmacy program as well as dedicated dieticians who round with us both in the general wards as well as the ICU.  Non-assigned admissions are split throughout the day between both IM teams, the Family Medicine service and our academic hospitalist program.  A dedicated night float rotation handles overnight admissions to the general medical floor.

Residents maintain both an internal medicine and HIV continuity clinic, housed across from OSUMC in the Internal Medicine clinic offices.  Depending on the rotation, residents will spend 0.5 to 1 day per week in their clinic.

Ancillary staff perform lab draws, EKG's and place peripheral IV's 24 hours per day.  While we pride ourselves in our ability to perform procedures we do have a robust and exceptional Interventional Radiology department, who will also assist with lines and procedures when necessary.

General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, OB/GYN, Radiology, Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Heme/Onc and Infectious Disease service lines are all active service lines and are all integral to the success of OSUMC.

Residency Curriculum

Structured didactics are a cornerstone of the Oklahoma State University Internal Medicine program.  Morning report occurs on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 0715-0800.  These conferences include a combination of attending and resident led topics ranging from journal reviews to clinical practice pearls to oral boards.  Grand rounds occur on most Tuesday mornings, include both national and in-house presenters, and rotate through topics centered on practice development, morbidity/mortality and clinical updates.  Wednesday mornings are set aside for book club, where the residents and attendings cover material presented in both Harrison's as well as carefully curated guideline and review articles.  Two months of the year, morning report is set aside as board review, where we cover either the medstudy or mksap video series for internal medicine.  Board review question banks are also provided for the residents each academic year at no charge.
