Kilobytes and Megabytes
Every photo, x-ray, diagram, chart or illustration used in a PowerPoint Presentation (or in any situation) has a size to it. That size is measured in Kilobytes (k).
- 1,000 k = 1 Megabyte (Mb)
Memory is the common term used for size since it takes up memory space on the hard drive, RAM and on a Server (such as CenterNet).
- 1 Mb can take up to 4-5 minutes to download on a 56k modem
The most common access type from home locations is a 56k modem. Don't forget, that just because you have a 56k modem, it doesn't mean you are actually receiving or sending data at that rate. Your phone connection is most likely functioning at less than 56k. Some places in the Tulsa area never get over 30!
Why Size Matters
Out of ten randomly chosen PowerPoint Presentations on CenterNet:
- 59 - average number of pages
- 31 - lowest number of pages
- 116 - highest number of pages
Calculate the smallest amount:
- 31 X 676k (typical size of full frame, uncompressed image) = 62 minutes
- 116 similar pages would take almost 4 hours to download!
Master of the Obvious
This, of course, means the PowerPoint would NOT be downloaded. It wouldn't be looked at because no one in their right mind will spend the time to download it.
The obvious conclusion is that you have to keep the graphic elements to a very small size. Doing that and keeping the image at an acceptable quality is where the work comes in.
