Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Graduates 81 New Physicians

(Tulsa, Okla) A total of 81 students received Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degrees from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Saturday, May 17. The invited speaker for the event was Dr. David J. Schmidly, president and chief executive officer of Oklahoma State University. Schmidly also received the College’s 2003 Distinguished Service Award.

OSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, for the third year in a row, is named one of the best medical schools in the nation for primary care and rural medicine, ranking 30th and 14th respectively among 144 medical schools. The exclusive top rankings are from the recently released U.S.News & World Report 2004 Best Graduate Schools Guide.

Since 1977, the College has graduated a total of 1,898 osteopathic physicians. Providing physicians to rural Oklahoma is one of the College's missions; 73% of graduates are in primary care (family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics). Half of all graduates remain in Oklahoma, with nearly 30% in communities of less than 10,000 residents.

Natasha N. Bray, D.O., Tulsa, received the Regents’ Award, the top award the medical school gives to a student. She also received the Academic Excellence Award and the LaButti Outstanding Scholar Award, presented by the Osteopathic Founders Foundation.

Clinical Excellence Award recipient was Jennifer M. Byrne, D.O., Tulsa; Leadership and Service award went to Nicole B. Washington, D.O., Baker, La.

Mind, Body and Spirit awards went to Bray, John L. Cherry, D.O., Sand Springs; Amanda G. Foster, D.O., Cushing; Ryan N. Hulver, D.O., Concordia, Mo; Sarah E. Janes, D.O., Red Oak; Viktorya Mills, D.O., Oklahoma City; and Michael K. Pickens, D.O., Tulsa.
