ACOP Peds Club is proud to present the inaugural “Mini Med School for Kids” – Topics: Nutrition, Obesity, and Fitness. This event was inspired by the national theme set forth by the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP) and OSU-Center for Health Sciences campaign for “A Healthy Change”. Our local ACOP chapter will host this event class for 3rd-5th grade students of Eugene Field Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The 115+ students will become “mini medical students” for the day and attend 5 carefully planned 20-minute sessions relating to the topics above, including:
- Nutrition Session I: Eating Healthy & Food Pyramid
- Nutrition Session II: “Healthy Foods Can Be Fun Too!” (Food Testers)
- Human Anatomy: Normal vs. Pathologic Hearts, Lungs, Brains, Bones, Teeth
- Staying Healthy: Obesity, Sports, Exercise, “Be a Fit Kid”, 5 Rules to Live By
- Staying Active: “Exercise around the World”, Appropriate Stretch, Aerobics Exercise, Yoga Techniques
A separate session will be held for all the teachers with follow-up materials for the classroom. These materials include nutrition worksheets, puzzles, interactive group activities, and learning resources designed to re-emphasize the importance of proper nutrition and staying active. The afternoon sessions will be supervised by Peds Club members, teachers, and community volunteers.
