OSU-CHS, OSU-Tulsa receive record funding from OCAST

Four faculty researchers from Oklahoma State University-Tulsa and OSU Center for Health Sciences were recently awarded more than $750,000 in grant funding from the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology. The grants, the largest presented to OSU in Tulsa, are for engineering and health research at the OSU-Tulsa Helmerich Research Center and OSU Center for Health Sciences.

Dr. Jay Hanan, associate professor in the OSU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was awarded $300,000 for the development of a light-weight, strong material for use in aircraft, automobiles, sporting goods and military equipment.

Dr. Ranji Vaidyanathan, Varnadow professor in the OSU School of Materials Science, was awarded $299,283 to develop and manufacture a compressed natural gas fuel tank. The project is in collaboration with CleanNG, an Oklahoma company working to develop advanced fuel storage products for natural gas vehicles.

Dr. Nirmal Govindaraju, a research associate in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, received $90,000 to create a portable sensor for detecting chemical and biological agents.

Dr. Gerwald Köhler, associate professor in the department of biochemistry and microbiology at OSU-CHS, was awarded $67,500 to study the influence of probiotics in digestive system on the central nervous system.

Since 2008, OSU-Tulsa and OSU-CHS have received more than $1.5 million from OCAST, a state agency established to foster innovation in existing and developing businesses in Oklahoma. OCAST provides funding to help universities, foundations and businesses with cutting-edge research in engineering and health sciences that will benefit Oklahoma's economy.
