Smith named national SOMA Board’s political affairs director

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association appointed Matthew Smith, MS-II, political affairs director on the national organization’s board of directors earlier this month. SOMA is the nation’s largest network of osteopathic medical students.

In his new position, Smith will follow relevant political developments and work with the American Osteopathic Association to keep SOMA members across the U.S. informed about proposed legislation. He is responsible for federal SOMA legislative advocacy efforts and working with the AOA, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents.

Smith is president of the OSU-COM SOMA chapter, a member of the Political Action Committee and secretary of the Wilderness Medicine Club. He was recently inducted into Omega Beta Iota, the national osteopathic political action honor society.
