Jernigan named chief compliance officer for OSU-CHS, OSUMC
Micki Jernigan was recently selected to be the chief compliance officer at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences and OSU Medical Center.
“OSU Center for Health Sciences and OSU Medical Center are committed to protecting the confidentiality of our patients’ medical records and complying with the diverse health care industry standards and regulations,” said OSU-CHS President Kayse Shrum. “Micki Jernigan has more than 15 years of experience in health care management and business operations, which will be a valuable asset to our medical school and teaching hospital.”
The chief compliance officer oversees OSU-CHS, OSU Physicians clinics and OSU Medical Center compliance with local, state and national higher education and health care laws and regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
As chief compliance officer, Jernigan will implement, review and enforce policies, procedures and standards of conduct to ensure compliance with these laws and regulations. She is also tasked with providing reports to the appropriate governing agencies.
Prior to joining OSU-CHS, she was chief compliance officer and HIPAA privacy officer at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., vice president for corporate compliance at Mercy Health Services in Baltimore, Md., director of corporate compliance at HealthSouth Corporation in Birmingham, Ala., director of corporate compliance at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., and director of corporate compliance and chief privacy officer at Sparks Health System in Fort Smith, Ark.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in administration of allied health from Northeastern State University in 1994, Master of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and her juris doctorate from the OU College of Law in 1998.
She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, Health Care Compliance Association and American Health Lawyers Association.
