Wayne C. Drevets, M.D., is April First Friday seminar speaker
Wayne C. Drevets, M.D., director and president of the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, is guest speaker at the First Friday seminar at noon Friday in room D-107, CAME. His topic explores how a deficit in central reward processing is thought to underlie the diminished ability of individuals with major depressive disorder to derive pleasure from activities once deemed enjoyable. Refreshments are available at 11:45 a.m. The presentation is open to the public.
OSU Mini-Medical School for Kids on campus Friday
OSU-COM student chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians presents a “Mini-Medical School for Kids” for Eugene Field Elementary School students from 1-2:30 p.m. Friday. OSU medical students conduct sessions about health and exercise, nutrition and anatomy. The goal of the program is to provide information about healthy living, to fight childhood obesity and to show the dangers of tobacco and drug use.
Dr. Nader talks about lung disease in older adults Tuesday at OSU-MC
Daniel Nader, D.O., associate professor of Internal Medicine at OSU-CHS, presents a free community education talk, “Lung Disease in the Older Adult,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at OSU Medical Center Auditorium, 7th and Houston. Book and Gift sale April 4-6 helps fund SAC scholarships
A book and gift sale returns to Founders Hall Monday through Wednesday, April 4-6. The event offers a variety of books-from children’s stories to cookbooks-and gift items. A portion of proceeds benefits Staff Advisory Council scholarships. Cash, checks and credit or debit cards are accepted.
SAC scholarship applications due April 15
OSU-CHS Staff Advisory Council Employee scholarship applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 15. For eligibility requirements and application forms: http://centernet.okstate.edu/staff_council/sac_sch_form.cfm
Scholarship chair Ronda J. Shouse said SAC awarded 12 scholarships last year. SAC fully funded six of those scholarships and OSU in Tulsa Human Resources and SAC combined funding for the remaining six. Number of scholarships awarded is based on available monies. Scholarships may be used at institutions other than OSU.
Book store expansion underway
Matthews Book Store is expanding. Debra Goertz, store manager, says the new area will house a food court that will offer fresh salads and sandwiches, a specialty coffee bar and fountain drinks. The store will add changing rooms and additional storage in the existing space. Construction should take four to six weeks.
Presentation selected for NCCHC seminar
A presentation, “A Model Program for Workforce Development in Correctional Mental Health: Outcome”, has been selected for inclusion in the National Commission on Correctional Health Care seminar in July. Senior author is Richard Wansley, Ph.D., and co-author is Dr. Robert Powitzky, chief mental health officer for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Wansley will meet with Dr. Scott Chavez, senior vice-president at the NCCHC, to explore a collaborative venture based on the workforce model developed in Oklahoma that expands to medical and other health professions training not only in Oklahoma but other states as well.
