Aging and thirst mechanisms is subject of First Friday Seminar
University of Iowa research scientist Robert Thunhorst, Ph.D., presents “Age-related declines in thirst mechanisms in the Brown Norway rat model of aging,” at noon Friday, May 6, in Room D-107, CAME. Dr. Thunhorst is a researcher in the psychology department and the cardiovascular center at the university.
His recent studies with aging rats suggest that diverse reflexive and behavioral responses to body fluid and sodium deficits decline with age at different rates. Results from these studies will contribute to better understanding of why hormonal and neural signaling mechanisms fail to promote adequate water and sodium ingestion in old age and, ultimately, may lead to better management of dehydration in the elderly. The presentation is open to the public. Refreshments are available at 11:45 a.m.
