OSU-CHS biomedical students present research in Ireland

Two biomedical sciences doctoral students have returned to OSU-CHS after presenting their research last month in Ireland.

Sheri Core and Dusti Sloan won travel awards to present their research during the joint meeting of the American Physiological Society and The Physiological Society in Dublin, Ireland. The students received the travel awards from the groups’organizing committee.

Core studies the estrogen modulation of behavioral responses to body sodium imbalance and the role of specific types of neurons in the central nervous system. Sloan’s research focuses on central interactions between estrogen and oxytocin in the control of feeding and body weight.

Pete’s Pet Posse Tulsa (P3T) will celebrate National Dog Day on Friday, Aug. 26 with dog-shaped donuts, snow cones, a raffle and dog movies all day in Founders Hall.

Two P3T dogs will greet students, faculty and staff in Founders Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including Max, a 3-year-old Labrador retriever, and handlers Dr. Bill Meek, OSU-CHS professor of anatomy and cell biology, and Sharon Meek; and Blue, a 6-year-old Australian shepherd, and handler Jessica Bradley, OSU-Tulsa career services.

Donuts from Country Donuts will be available from 7-9 a.m. and snow cones from Josh’s Sno Shack from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Founders Hall. Dog-themed movies will be played on screen in Founders Hall. A dog-themed gift basket will be given away in a raffle for donors to P3T. Participants who make a minimum donation to P3T will be entered into a drawing to win one of five Mavis Pearl stuffed animals. Mavis Pearl, an English bulldog and canine celebrity, is an honorary P3T member and goodwill ambassador for local nonprofit Joy in the Cause, an organization dedicated to showing individuals in crisis care and compassion through personal acts of kindness. OSU-CHS employee helped prepare swimmers for Olympics

Darin Tyson, program coordinator for Alumni Affairs, spent the last seven years or more helping elite swimmers with strength training for the Olympics, including seven who made it to the Rio games in 2016 and five to the London games in 2012.

Ryan Lochte, a 31-year-old swimmer who helped Team USA men win a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay, is among the notable athletes who Tyson has helped with strength training and conditioning. Tyson first began working with Olympic swimmers as they readied for the 2012 London Olympics.

Other Olympic swimmers he worked with include gold and bronze medalist Katie Meili, gold and silver medalist Cullen Jones, gold and silver medalist Nick Thoman and gold medalist Davis Tarwater. Read more.
