Summer Rural Externship (SRE)

Summer Rural Externship Summary:

  • Three-week rotation to reinforce student interest in rural practice
  • Prepare the students for their rural clerkships
  • Comprised of clinical office experience in a small community, community service, and interdisciplinary shadowing

Clinical Experience:
The clinical experience occurs in a family physician's office in a rural community. As an integral portion of this program, these clinical experiences may also include such out-of-office experiences such as:

  • Hospital staff and committee meetings
  • House calls
  • Hospital emergency room calls       
  • Community and public health functions
  • Fraternal and social functions

This course is a three-week summer rotation in a community-based rural setting with a Primary Care physician. The student will spend 32 hours each week seeing patients with the preceptor.  The rotation is also oriented toward community participation and service, and will provide the student with an opportunity to learn about community health networks, resources, the role of the physician in a rural community, and the benefits and challenges of practice in a rural community.  The student will work closely with the AHEC Program Office and the regional AHEC coordinator who will facilitate the community activities.
