The Center for Rural Health’s Rural Telemedicine Program
has the following goals:
- Educate OSU-CHS medical students
- Train them in the use of telemedicine
- Support rural physicians, hospitals other rural healthcare providers
- Increase access to specialist and sub-specialist for Oklahoma’s rural residents
Since its 2001 inception the program has received approximately $1.4 million in federal funds to pay for telemedicine equipment, software, training, and staff for the telemedicine and distance learning sites that comprise the OSU Telemedicine Network. The Center for Rural Health collaborates with the OSU Telemedicine Center to support student education, residency training, hospitals, and physicians. Our future goals include:
- Increase the number of telemedicine sites over the next 5 years into as many rural sites as feasible, with a special focus on increasing our footprint in Western Oklahoma
- Update equipment as needed in existing telemedicine/distance learning sites
- Recruit specialists to deliver services and primary care physicians who will refer patients
- Support the integration of the Rural Telemedicine Program into a broader Regional Health Information Organization
